Downtime :: transferring webhosts and domain registrars

The site was down for a week as I was switching web hosts. Took longer than expected to get it mostly sorted. The Drupal installation is pretty easy to switch to a new host but there may still be a few bugs to work out...

Dreamhost has these crazy rebates... up to $97 off for a year's hosting plan. And gigs of space and bandwith.

We'll see in the next year if the saving in price is worth the level of service. At this point in the game it seems that all web hosting services are pretty much the same.

Update :: Castles in Spain gmap

I uploaded a few more images of sites in Spain and created a gmap for the castles there now that google earth has better imagery. I also better organized the Spain image galleries.

Castles in Spain

Not every castle is on the map yet, mainly because I can't remember where some of them were. But with the improved imagery you can actually see the outlines of the walls and structures. You can even trace the path of the Camino - do the camino from the comfort of your home online!

Update :: Pohnpei emplacement gallery

My friend Joe Genz spent a year doing "research" in the Marshall Islands. He took a trip to Pohnpei Island in the Carolines and snapped a few images of a WWII Japanese gun emplacement there. The cannons are intact and the whole area is surrounded by flowers. Coastal fortifications in Paradise!

Update :: Misc image galleries back online

There was a bug in the image_import module (which allowed mass image upload) that allowed images anonymous read/write access.

It's fixed now and so the misc image galleries (WWII in color, propaganda posters, and maritime art) are back online.

Update :: Castle and Spain

Added the last Schwarzwald castle, Schneeburg. Schneeburg is probably one of the best castles I went to, with a great view over Freiburg and the mountains, and quite easy to get to.

Also added the Pamplona city walls and the Spanish Civil War bunkers at the Roncevaux Pass along the Camino de Santiago.

Update :: Feste Istein and Black Forest Castles

A few updates:

Images and text about Feste Istein, a moderately large work in the SW corner of Germany, fortified before both world wars and blown all to hell soon after.

The problem with losing wars is that your fortifications are destroyed.

A further example of this problem is exemplified through all the castles in the Black Forest. There are probably over fifty within that many kilometers of Freiburg. Of course, the French blew most of them sky-high during the Thirty Years War. This is the problem with the French, although they do have some good fortifications of their own.

WTH, a blog...

Not so much a blog par se... but an update method for the website. As well as recordings of the latest mis-adventures, bunker-spelunking, or related academic "research". And I use the term research here very loosely.

I also want to include some sort of meme-journal as like my old webpage, now defunct.

Of course, I am no blogger and proud of it, so this won't be updated that often.
